Rafting, rocks and the magic of Northern Cape communities

Ever seen a recruiter out in the wild? It doesn’t happen often but when they do venture out from behind their desks, swopping out their headsets for kayak paddles, it’s truly a sight to behold. AltGen’s 2024 team building took place in the white water of the Orange River and across various communities in the Northern Cape.

Day 1: AltGen takes to the water

AltGen’s Pofadder office acted as homebase for the duration of the trip. On day one, the team headed out to the river to try their hand at river-rafting. In true recruitment fashion of course, our team made a race out of it – interestingly…the combined Finance and IT team came out on top! Guided by the Red Rock rafting team, AltGen all in all enjoyed a sunny day out rafting, swimming, paddle-boarding and discovering some interesting geoids. To end of a brilliant day of team building, the AltGen team was treated to a lekker braai on the South African border with the occasional Bobbejaan and mountain monkey venturing closer to inspect the group.

Day 2: AltGen on site

Day 2 saw the AltGen team travelling to the Konkoonsies II Solar PV plant. Our team was warmly greeted by the on-site team and treated to a farmers-breakfast style information session. With over 20 inverters and 2000+ solar panels on site, the every-day details matter. From SCADA room nitty-gritties, to hourly-tilting of solar panels, the connection and relay points, to snake holes…our newbies learned A LOT. Perhaps most surprising to the team was the scale of the project. Knowing that Konkoonsies II is an 85MW plant powered by 200+ solar panels and seeing the rows and rows of panels in action, are two very different things.

Day 3: Community visits

For the final day of our AltGen Team Building trip, our team visited our Workforce Management team in Onseepkans. The new team members experienced first-hand how our Pofadder team facilitates this economic development component of energy projects in the region across the 4 local communities. The Workforce Management programme is made up of over 110 people in these communities – each one showing their love for their community in various ways. From creating community gardens, to keeping both the schools and police stations tidy, the Workforce Management team embodies the philosophy of ‘work by the community for the community’.

This golden thread that binds the community together, can also be felt in the sunny-yellow Kleinbegin creche. With two well-equipped classrooms and a brilliant team of teachers and assistants, our team’s days are always brightened by a visit to the creche.

Final thoughts…

Although our team has visited the communities and our office in the Northern Cape several times before, we always come back having learnt something new. This time round, the dichotomy of rural and innovation really stood out to our team. In and amongst the beautiful ‘nothingness’ of the Northern Cape landscape, sits highly advanced technology, machines that harness the power of the sun and create energy that powers homes and businesses.

It’s easy to forget, however, that the success of this technology relies greatly on the people doing the work on the ground. Without firmly established relationships with the community, projects would undoubtedly fail before they even have the chance to begin.

Needless to say, the AltGen team building trip was a huge success and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for next year.
