Description

Our client is a major investor in renewable energy infrastructure, delivering innovative, technology-agnostic solutions — including thermal, solar, battery storage, and biomass — to commercial and industrial clients across Africa and the Middle East.

They are seeking a Thermal Delivery Engineer to lead the technical delivery of thermal energy projects across Africa. The role covers the full project lifecycle — from pre-construction to commissioning and post-delivery support — with a strong focus on solid-fired power and steam generation systems.

This is a hands-on, delivery-focused position requiring deep technical expertise, experience managing complex projects in emerging markets, and a passion for driving decarbonisation across the region.

Education Requirements

Engineering degree (preferably with Honours in Mechanical/Thermodynamic Engineering) from a reputable university

Experience Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of the renewable Thermal industry in Africa
  • Proven experience with solid-fired power plants/CHP plants (minimum 1MW) and solid-fired steam boiler projects (minimum 6t/h)
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a design engineer for Thermal power plants

Responsibilities

Pre-Construction

  • Collaborate with Business Development Teams across markets to develop and deliver innovative and complex decarbonisation solutions for clients
  • Review and assist in updating standard technical contract documentation
  • Review tender proposals and technical specifications
  • Identify and work with key vendors in each country
  • Prepare scopes of work and manage third-party consultants
  • Guide construction partners through technical specifications and provide training as needed
  • Conduct site visits to assess technical risks
  • Engage with clients' technical teams
  • Train site engineers
  • Review engineering drawings and documentation from vendors to ensure compliance with project requirements
  • Lead HSE and design safety reviews

Construction and Commissioning

  • Manage technical delivery of projects with the Project Manager
  • Oversee design by vendors, contractors, and third-party consultants
  • Manage technical interfaces and relationships with external consultants
  • Lead internal technical team on each project
  • Ensure compliance with PPA and technical requirements
  • Support implementation of QA/QC plans and acceptance testing
  • Conduct regular site visits and manage technical compliance during construction
  • Supervise construction partners' technical teams and ensure commissioning processes meet internal standards
  • Ensure all technical documentation aligns with internal requirements

Post-Commissioning

  • Manage contractor/vendor technical liabilities
  • Assess plant performance against PPA and vendor obligations
  • Oversee O&M technical obligations of partners and contractors
  • Conduct project debriefs and provides feedback to the internal technical team

Reporting

  • Fulfill internal reporting and management requirements
  • Provide regular project updates and briefings

As a lean organisation, team members are expected to contribute beyond their core responsibilities, including involvement in project development, sales, reporting, and administrative tasks.

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative team player
  • Excellent written English; additional African languages an advantage
  • Proficiency in MS Office and relevant design software
  • Passion for decarbonisation in Africa
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently
  • Strong understanding of the technical aspects of Thermal markets
