Position Overview
An established EPC contractor providing engineered solutions to the water and wastewater treatment industry is seeking a self-motivated and detail-oriented Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its engineering team. The business delivers projects across the African continent, providing exposure to medium- and large-scale water and process plant projects.
The successful candidate will take responsibility for mechanical engineering design activities from concept through to installation, commissioning and performance testing.
Key Responsibilities
Take responsibility for engineering deliverables across medium- to large-scale projects.
Select and specify mechanical equipment, including pumps, motors, valves, piping and associated components.
Compile detailed equipment lists and datasheets.
Review GA, mechanical, civil, piping and structural drawings and provide formal engineering comments.
Generate, interpret and review P&IDs and PFDs.
Develop plant layouts considering access, services, site levels and other project constraints.
Perform mechanical engineering calculations, including strength of materials and fluid dynamics.
Select materials of construction based on cost, availability and chemical compatibility.
Perform FEA analyses on components.
Develop detailed scopes of work and prepare budgetary estimates for tenders.
Provide technical support to project management, procurement, manufacturing, construction and drawing office teams.
Conduct manufacturing and installation quality inspections.
Support the installation, commissioning and performance testing of water treatment plants, including pump performance testing.
Work with engineering and construction teams to ensure quality workmanship and project delivery.
Conduct local and international site visits as required.
Ensure designs comply with applicable regulations, occupational health and safety legislation, project specifications and relevant local and international standards.
Qualifications & Experience
B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering.
Minimum of 10 years' relevant mechanical engineering experience within the water treatment or process plant industries.
Strong knowledge of P&IDs, piping system design, piping component specifications and plant design.
Experience with steel structure design in accordance with SANS Codes.
Practical, hands-on site experience.
Knowledge of water treatment processes is advantageous.
Own transport, valid driver's licence and passport are required.
Software Skills
Autodesk AutoCAD 2D – intermediate proficiency required.
Microsoft Excel and Word – advanced proficiency essential.
Autodesk Inventor – advantageous.
SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation – advantageous.

Important Note
Applicants must hold a B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering and have at least 10 years' relevant experience within the water treatment or process plant industries. Strong experience in P&IDs, piping system design, plant design and practical site-based mechanical engineering is essential.
